Choose the right photo!

When choosing photos to send with your order - if possible - please be selective.

I prefer you to send me - high resolution - high quality - JPEG files! Photos over 1mb in size are ideal. If your photo is below 500k please consider that it might be too small to work with.

Please ensure the photo is sharp and detailed enough, and has good lighting and composition. If you're not sure you can email the photo to me and I can advise if it's OK before you place your order.

I realise it's possible your pet sadly may have passed away, or you may want a very old photo used for a pet portrait. In these cases your only option may be poor quality photos.

Email them to me and I can advise what can be done.

This is an example of a good photo to work with:

Good Photo

The subject fills the photograph, has good lighting, and when zooming in the detail stays sharp and consistent. This is an excellent image to create a pet portrait.

This is an example of an acceptable photo to work with:

Acceptable Photo

This photo is acceptable because on zooming in there is still some details in the focal area, also the subject's head fills a large area of the photo. However, it lacks sharpness and is pixelated, as well as having poor lighting.

Please see if you can find a sharper photo with better lighting for me to create your pet portrait.

This is not a good photo to work from:

Bad Photo

This photo seems fine when viewed at a distance but when looked at more closely it looks blurred. Also, notice that the lighting and composition is not so good (the head is cropped off the edge of the photo).

The picture possibly would have been usable at a much higher resolution so please check that your digital camera is on the highest quality setting so that you can take the ideal shot.

Photos taken on a camera phone are often like this and are not recommended.

Remember - the larger the photo the better! If it's too large to email you can post it to me copied on to a CD. Alternatively, I can use a photographic print which you can also post to me.

Please remember...
the better the photo - the better the finished portrait!

...and it's worth your while
(if possible) to get good quality photos to send to me!

Some extra tips:

All my portraits are created from photographs, and actual lab processed prints (rather than inkjet prints) are required, unless you can email your photos to me.

I want to create a portrait capturing the true likeness and character of your pet. This is made much easier if you can supply me with clear, detailed photographs, with accurate colouring.

Please try to send at least two clear photos taken at eye level with your pet preferably in natural light. Photos are always best taken outside in natural light as indoor flash photography can wash out your pet's natural colouring, and cause red-eye.

Very dark or black animals can be photographed successfully in sunlight with the sun behind the camera. White animals work well with indirect light, say taken on an overcast day or in shadow on a sunny day.

Additional photos are helpful, giving me an overall picture but please indicate which is your preferred photo. Notes describing your pets character, coat and eye colouring etc can also be helpful.

If your photo(s) are valuable you may want to have copies made, although I prefer to work from the original. If sending by 'snail mail' use registered post for guaranteed delivery to me. I return all photos to you unharmed.

If you're sending your pictures by email, the resolution of the image should be no less than 200dpi. Please send me - high resolution - high quality - JPEG files! Photos over 1mb in size are ideal. If your photo is below 500k please consider that it might be too small to work with.

I may decide not to take on a commission if the photos supplied are too difficult to work from.

I can also arrange to take photographs myself for customers in the local Arbroath area. Call me to arrange a photo shoot.
